How to Look After Your Garden During a Heatwave

How to Look After Your Garden During a Heatwave

Heatwaves can be tough on both plants and gardeners. But with a few smart strategies, you can help your garden survive - and even thrive - in soaring temperatures. Here’s how:

1. Water Wisely

  • Water early or late: The best times are early morning or evening when temperatures are cooler and water can soak deep into the soil.
  • Deep soak: Rather than a quick sprinkle, water deeply a few times a week to encourage strong root growth.
  • Check soil first: Stick your finger in the soil, if it’s still damp an inch or two down, skip watering for that day.

2. Mulch, Mulch, Mulch

A layer of mulch (such as wood chips, bark, or compost) helps:

  • Lock in moisture
  • Regulate soil temperature
  • Reduce water loss from evaporation.

Add a 5–7cm (2–3 inch) layer around the base of plants to protect their roots from the blazing sun.

3. Protect Plants from Scorching Sun

  • Use shade cloth or garden fleece to shield delicate plants.
  • Group potted plants together for mutual shade.
  • Move hanging baskets and smaller pots to cooler spots.

4. Avoid Pruning and Planting

Plants are already stressed during a heatwave, so save pruning, planting, and transplanting for cooler weather. Let your garden focus on surviving, not recovering from extra stress.

5. Care for Container Plants

Pots dry out much faster than garden beds, so:

  • Water daily (or twice daily for smaller pots)
  • Move containers to shaded spots when temperatures peak
  • Use saucers to help retain water

6. Think About Wildlife

Heat affects pollinators and other garden visitors too.

  • Put out shallow dishes of water with pebbles for bees and butterflies
  • Maintain bird baths and top up with fresh water regularly

7. Stay Calm and Plan Ahead

Heatwaves don’t last forever. Focus on keeping your garden alive and healthy until temperatures drop. After the heat breaks, assess any damage and make recovery plans if needed.
